Welcome To The Winnipeg School Division
Adult EAL Program
Our Program
The Winnipeg School Division is a leader in the development and implementation of EAL resources, including the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for Literacy Learners. The CLBs help to establish students' levels in English speaking, listening, reading, writing and numeracy, and they changed the way that EAL Literacy is taught across Canada. WSD's long history of teaching lower-level EAL learners is recognized country-wide.
The Winnipeg School Division Adult English as an Additional Language (EAL) Program focuses on providing students with practical training in the English language for settlement, educational and employment purposes.
In order to help students transition into a workplace environment, we also provide optional afternoon literacy activity classes. These classes are designed to develop Essential Skills for the Canadian workplace. They are taught in an EAL format.
The Adult EAL program offers classes from CLB 1, CLB 2, Ph 1, Ph 2, as well as Workplace English. Classes are available in the mornings, afternoons or evenings.
Our Staff
The Adult EAL staff care about the success and well-being of our students. They are aware of challenges that students have experienced, and go out of their way to help them overcome these challenges. They are well educated, holding both a Bachelor of Education and a CTESL (Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language).
Our two Community Support Workers assist students with short-term counselling regarding conflicts, housing, referrals and other needs that they may have. We take pride in going above and beyond the needs of our students, helping them to achieve a lifestyle that will allow them to fully concentrate on their studies.
Our Students
Students of the Adult EAL Program are adult immigrants who are looking to improve their skills in the English language in order to settle in Manitoba, to go to school, or to get a job.
EAL classes are free to Manitoba residents who are 18 years old or older, and who are permanent residents or Canadian citizens born outside Canada, refugee claimants, or provincial nominees who have received a letter of approval from the Manitoba government, including spouses and adult children.
